Forget Terrorism; What about Abuse & Assault?

Columbia, Missouri, is about as vanilla an American town as you could want. You don’t expect it to make world headlines as a place of Islamic violence. Yet, here is the Daily Mail headline: “University of Missouri assistant professor charged with ‘violently grabbing 14-year-old relative by the hair and dragging her out of school for not wearing hijab’

An assistant professor at an American university has been arrested for allegedly grabbing a 14-year-old female relative by the hair and dragging her into a car after he noticed she wasn’t wearing a hijab.

Youssif Z. Omar, 53, was reportedly at Hickman High School in Columbia, Missouri, on Tuesday when he spotted that the girl did not have the traditional Muslim headscarf.

Officer Latisha Stroer told the Columbia Tribune in an email that Omar grabbed the girl ‘very violently by the hair’.

He then allegedly slapped her across the face, and pulled her by the hair down a flight of stairs and into his car.

Omar was arrested the next day and released on $4,500 bond. He is charged with “suspicion of child abuse” according to the story. I am curious why he was not simply charged with assault.

Omar’s LinkedIn page lists him as being an assistant professor at the University of Missouri, Columbia and manager of Artifacts Journal at the University bookstore.

His Facebook page says he’s married and originally from Benghazi, Libya. His LinkedIn profile says he was the head of the English department at the University of Benghazi Wahat Branch from 2003-2007.

Perhaps Omar was a refugee of NATO’s and the US’s barbaric bombing and sponsoring of terrorists to overthrow the Gaddafi regime. But even if that was true, plainly this man had not fully realized what it meant to live in America.

Doesn’t our government have any responsibility to inform prospective immigrants about what it means to live in America?

This isn’t as bad as terrorism. But this man was as likely as any Muslim immigrant to understand the rules we are all expected to live by in America.

What’s going to happen when we admit 10,000 refugees from Syria? Some states are concerned about terrorism. But we’ve also got to consider an increase in domestic violence.
